SAGA Program Class Descriptions:

Music & Dance with Intro to Recorder Playing, Wednesdays, 4:00 – 5:00 pm

Teacher: Sabine Endrigkeit

Music is not only for our ears. In the elementary music education program “music and dance“, which is based on the teachings of Carl Orff, we will experience music with our body through rhythmic exercises, improvisation and dance. Elements of the musical language (note reading, tempo, dynamics and other nomenclature) will also be introduced. The program “music and dance” was put together by Rudolf Nykrin, a professor at the Orffs-Institute of the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Nykrin was a close co-worker of Carl Orff and focuses in his work on music education, specifically music education for young children. The children will also be introduced to the recorder. Children ages 5 to 6 years are welcome.

Recorder Playing (advanced), Wednesdays, 5:05 – 6:05 pm

Teacher: Sabine Endrigkeit

The recorder is a very popular instrument in Germany used to introduce young children to reading and playing music. The soprano-recorder, small, easy to carry and affordable, is an excellent way to introduce your child (and yourself) to music making. At the same time it offers the possibility for the so inclined to enter deep into the musical literature. The recorder’s popularity peaked during the baroque period. It has been rediscovered and has regained distinction in our time and an abundance of new pieces have been composed for it over the past century. This class is a continuation of the introductory class offered in the Fall. Children ages 7 to 9 years can join this class with no previous recorder experience.

Sports, Wednesdays, 4:00 – 5:00 pm and 5:05 – 6:05 pm

Teachers: Desiree Ehling and Sarah Ruth

This class will offer a variety of age-appropriate activities such as sports games, gymnastics, aerobic exercises, stretching, fun and more. This class will take place in the gym within the John Marshall building. Children ages 6 to 9 years are welcome in the 4:00 – 5:00 pm session, and ages 4 to 6 in the 5:05 to 6:05 pm session.
