Preschool, Pre-K

The SAGA School offers Preschool (children 30 months - 5 years old) and Pre-K (children 4-5 years old) programs Monday - Friday from 9:30a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Families may build their preschool schedule on convenient days (2, 3, 4, or 5 days) based on space availability. Our experience has shown that children enrolled in at least 3 days a week have greater success with language acquisition. Pre-K students may choose either a 4 or 5 day schedule. All students attend Monday - Wednesday. For students attending a 4 day week, parents choose either Thursday or Friday as the student's fourth day.

Preschool and Pre-K entry occurs in September. It is our admittance policy that all preschool students are 30 months old and Pre-K students are 4 years old on or before August 31st. However, at the SAGA School Board and teachers' discretion, we will make every effort to accommodate students who fall near the cutoff date.

In the SAGA School Preschool, pre-academic skills are taught through hands-on, real life experiences, with a focus on experimentation, play and self-correction. Scribbling, drawing, and invented spelling and letters are viewed as necessary steps towards literacy; conventional writing forms are introduced through letter recognition, story time, assisted spelling and text in the classroom. Math and science concepts are acquired through games, observations of and interactions with nature, and classroom discussions.

Example of the Preschool daily schedule:

  • 9:25-10:00 arrival, theme related structured free play
  • 10:00-10:30 morning circle and story time
  • 10:30-11:00 art and craft projects/zahlen and entenland
  • 11:00-11:30 free play, board games, puzzles
  • 11:30-12:00 lunch
  • 12:00-12:45 playground
  • 12:45-1:00 return from playground, wash hands
  • 1:00-1:30 end circle

SAGA's Pre-K program will follow a schedule similar to the preschool program. The curriculum will focus on fine-tuning various skills in preparation for Kindergarten. Some examples are drawing within the lines, increased focus in the classroom, and improving gross motor skills.

The multi-age classroom encourages a strong community where older children serve as models for their younger classmates. Younger children tend to develop independence more quickly because of the assistance of an older "buddy" in the group. Preschoolers often stretch themselves to imitate their older peers.

Older children, on the other hand, benefit by taking on the role of mentors and practicing leadership skills while boosting their self-esteem and confidence. Cognitive skills are equally improved through the opportunity to reinforce, consolidate, and expand upon knowledge shared with younger children.
